Analysis of 100 cases Newly Admitted to Care Homes from Hospital

This project was led by Juliet MacArthur, supported by Azucena Garrido Garcia, Sarah Rhynas, Gemma Logan, Susan Shenkin and Alasdair MacLullich. It was funded by the Alex & Elizabeth Gibson Trust (Scottish Charity Number: SC043311) and had commenced before I arrived in Edinburgh. The case notes of a sample of 100 individuals admitted from home and discharged to a care home were studied in depth to describe the individuals and processes involved. My involvement has been in the data entry and analysis of the quantitative findings from the project.

An oral presentation was given to the British Geriatrics Society Spring Conference in Liverpool, May 2016 with interesting discussion and feedback at the event and on twitter. A poster was presented at the British Society of Gerontology Annual Meeting in Stirling (6-8th July 2016), download a copy here.

Our paper arising from this work has been published in Age and Ageing and can be downloaded here. Work is well underway on the follow-up study to develop our understanding on this vital topic from the perspective of those involved: patients, families, carers and staff.

We were contacted by the Nursing Times who invited us to write a discussion paper arising from our findings. This was published and is available to download here.

The companion paper, analysing ten of the hundred cases in-depth, has been published in the International Journal of Older People Nursing. This was published and is available here.
